Report: Super Bowl 59 Ads Selling for as Much as $8M Ahead of NFL Broadcast on Fox
With the largest television audience of the year likely to be on Feb. 9 for the Kansas City Chiefs-Philadelphia Eagles matchup in Super Bowl 59, Fox is cashing in on advertising sales for the big game.
Per Brian Steinberg of Variety, Fox Corp. has sold at least 10 ad spots during the Super Bowl for more than $8 million.
Fox Corporation CEO Lachlan Murdoch told reporters in November the network sold out its Super Bowl ad inventory at "what we believe are record pricing."
Deadline's Dade Hayes noted at the time of Murdoch's comments that the price for a 30-second spot was "believed to be north of $7 million" but that it "surged even higher in the intervening months."
According to Hayes, the average price for a Super Bowl 59 ad is $7.5 million. That marks the highest in history and a $500,000 increase from last year's game between the Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers.
The $500,000 price hike is the largest single-season increase for Super Bowl ad sales since the 2021 NFL season ($900,000). That season comes with a caveat because the cost for a Super Bowl ad during the 2020 season was flat from the previous year ($5.6 million) in part because ratings were down for all sports, including Super Bowl 55, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Per Hayes, Fox could end up making around $700 million in ad revenue by having broadcast rights for this year's Super Bowl.
The Chiefs' attempt to become the first team to three-peat as Super Bowl champions could lead to a record audience for the Feb. 9 game. Their overtime victory over the 49ers last year generated the largest TV audience recorded by Nielsen with an average of 123.7 million viewers.
