Malinin Aiming for Third Consecutive Title
2 of 4
Ilia Malinin was a first-time medalist in the men's championship at the U.S. competition in 2022, when he earned a silver behind six-time champion Nathan Chen. However, Chen didn't participate in the event the past two years, as Malinin ascended to the top of the podium in his place.
After winning back-to-back men's titles in 2023 and 2024, Malinin will try to make it three in a row in 2025. The 20-year-old also won his first world championship last year, as he continues to get better with more experience.
Malinin broke Chen's world record free skate score at last year's U.S. championships, totaling 227.79 points. So it should be exciting to see what he has in store for this year's event.
Can Glenn Go Back to Back?
3 of 4
Amber Glenn won a silver medal at the U.S. championships in 2021, then a bronze in 2023. But she had never finished atop the women's podium at the event. Until last year.
In 2024, Glenn won her first national title by defeating silver medalist Josephine Lee and bronze medalist Isabeau Levito, who had previously won gold in 2023. This year, the 25-year-old Glenn has an opportunity to become the first women's skater to win consecutive golds at the event since Alysa Liu went back to back in 2019 and 2020.
Levito will miss this year's U.S. championships due to a foot injury, so she won't have a chance to reclaim her spot atop the podium. So Glenn could be viewed as the favorite going into the 2025 event.
Chock, Bates Have Chance at History
4 of 4
History could be made in the ice dance competition at this year's U.S. championships. That's because Madison Chock and Evan Bates could win their record-tying sixth gold medal in the event, after previously winning in 2015, 2020 and every year from 2022-24.
Chock and Bates have dominated the discipline in recent years, and it would be surprising if their three-year run at the top ends next week. If they win their sixth title, it would match the record previously set by Meryl Davis and Charlie White, who won six straight from 2009-14.
Don't expect an upset to occur, as Chock and Bates are the clear favorites to win again.
