Xavier McKinney Recruits Jets' Davante Adams Back to Packers amid Tee Higgins Rumors

Paul KasabianJan 14, 2025

Green Bay Packers safety Xavier McKinney would like to see New York Jets wide receiver Davante Adams back in town.

McKinney made his feelings known in a response to an X post in which Adams spoke about the impending free agency of Cincinnati Bengals wideout Tee Higgins during an appearance on Up & Adams.

Adams has two years left on a five-year, $140 million contract, although the Jets could in theory release the 32-year-old this offseason and make him a free agent.

McKinney and Adams have never been teammates. McKinney joined the Packers last offseason on a four-year, $68 million contract after playing his rookie deal with the New York Giants. Adams played in Green Bay from 2014-2021 before being traded to the Las Vegas Raiders. He landed with the Jets last October, joining forces with ex-teammate and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

It didn't work out in New York, which finished 5-12. Rodgers' future is unknown. It's very possible he could retire, as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network noted.

Even if he returns, it's possible the new Jets' general manager, whomever that may be, parts ways with Rodgers in search of a rebuild.

If Rodgers is gone, one can surmise that Adams could perhaps desire playing elsewhere, especially given the team's losing nature and rebuilding state. And if the Jets feel the same way, then he could certainly find himself a free agent.

There's a lot of ifs in play, but the bottom line is that there's an avenue for Adams to find himself as a free agent.

The Packers would be an interesting option, simply because it's a young and competitive team that could use a true No. 1 wideout. There's plenty of talent at the position in town with Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson (who unfortunately just suffered a torn ACL on Jan. 5) in the mix. But Adams could lead that young group and be the team's top target as Green Bay looks to make a deep playoff push next year.

Of course, Adams should have his pick of teams vying for his services if he does become a free agent. He was productive for the Jets, catching 67 passes for 854 yards and seven touchdowns in just 11 games. Teams will take notice, and one of them could be the Packers, whose star defensive player has certainly made his opinion known.
