The Jets were the first to request an interview with Spagnuolo, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Wednesday.

Spagnuolo won a Super Bowl with the New York Giants as DC in 2008, so he could soon take a job with their intracity rival.

The Raiders and Jaguars were next to request interviews, per The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

Spagnuolo has led the Chiefs' defense since 2019. His head coaching experience includes three seasons with the then-St. Louis Rams and one interim campaign for the Giants.

Spagnuolo's best season with the Rams came during their 7-9 campaign in 2010, although that season was bookended by 1-15 and 2-14 runs.

He returned to assistant roles after his exit from the Rams, joining the New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens before returning to the Giants for a second stint as DC.

After spending part of the 2017 season as interim head coach, Spagnuolo left New York to join the Chiefs ahead of the 2019 season. There, he reunited with head coach Andy Reid after previously working with him in Philadelphia.

Spagnuolo was tasked with overhauling a unit that finished the 2018 season ranked 31st in total defense.

Five seasons later, the Chiefs' defense completed the 2023 campaign with a No. 2 ranking before going on to help Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense win a second straight Super Bowl.

Both former Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce and former Jets head coach Robert Saleh came from defensive backgrounds. If either team chooses to once more focus on defense in their next hire, Spagnuolo's two decades of experience could make him an appealing candidate.

Although he signed an extension with the Chiefs ahead of the 2024 season, Spagnuolo recently confirmed that he would like another opportunity to be an NFL coach, per A to Z Sports' Charles Goldman.

Spagnuolo isn't the only member of the Chiefs reportedly being considered by the Jets after the midseason firings of Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas.

Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is already set to interview for the Jets head coaching vacancy, while assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi is speaking with the team about their opening at general manager, per Fox Sports' Peter Schrager.
