Bradley Beal on Suns Trade Rumors: 'I Need to Be Addressed Because I Hold the Cards'

Joseph ZuckerJan 7, 2025

Phoenix Suns guard Bradley Beal is expecting to be kept abreast of any new developments regarding his status with the franchise as he remains the subject of trade speculation.

For the first time since 2015-16, Beal came off the bench in the Suns' 109-99 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night. He had 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting along with five assists.

The three-time All-Star said after the game he hasn't heard anything directly from the team when asked about any connection between his move to the second unit and all of the trade rumors.

"If so, I need to be addressed because I hold the cards," he told reporters. "Until I'm addressed and somebody says something different, then I'll be a Sun."

Beal does in fact "hold the cards" by virtue of the no-trade clause written into the five-year, $251 million contract he signed with the Washington Wizards in 2022. Just as the Wizards had to accede to his wishes when they sent him to Phoenix, the Suns can't ship him out to anywhere he doesn't want to go.

That presents a significant road block with the team reportedly pursuing disgruntled Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler.

The Suns and Heat could swap Beal ($50.2 million) and Butler ($48.8 million) since they're on similar salaries (with a few other moving pieces). There's only one problem: Miami doesn't want Beal.

The Miami Herald's Anthony Chiang reported in October 2023 his no-trade clause was a sticking point for the Heat. He followed up Monday to say the situation remains the same.

Phoenix and Miami would need to involve a third team to make this work, and Beal would have to be OK playing for that third team.

No-trade clauses are a rarity in the NBA, and Beal securing one from the Wizards was considered a major surprise at the time. The headaches it has presented them and the Heat mean it might be a long time before another franchise is willing to include that clause for its own star player.
