NBA Rumors: 'Scant Evidence' Heat Would Trade Jimmy Butler for Suns' Bradley Beal

Joseph ZuckerDec 23, 2024

There isn't much traction on a blockbuster trade involving the Miami Heat's Jimmy Butler and Phoenix Suns' Bradley Beal, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

"It is also a misnomer to suggest that the Suns, whose interest in trading for Butler is absolutely genuine, only need Bradley Beal to waive his no-trade clause to successfully relocate the face of Heat Culture for the past half-decade," Stein wrote. "The Heat would also have to be willing to swap Butler for Beal and there is scant evidence in circulation to suggest that they are."

This comes after Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported that "there have been zero indications suggesting" Beal would waive his no-trade clause to facilitate a trade to Miami.

The Miami Herald's Anthony Chiang reported in October 2023 the no-trade clause was an issue for the Heat when they weighed a deal with the Washington Wizards.

Considering Beal's trade value hasn't improved much since he landed in Phoenix, it's hard to see how Miami would view him as a satisfactory piece back in a Butler trade, a move that would significantly alter the franchise's short-term outlook.

Sure, the Heat would be exchanging an impending free agent for a player under contract for up to two more years, but Beal's contract is more of a burden than it is an asset. He makes $53.7 million in 2025-26 and has a $57.1 million player option for 2026-27.

Unlike Butler, the three-time All-Star hasn't shown himself to be a player who can uplift his franchise in the postseason, either. He has yet to advance past the conference semifinals through six postseason trips.

The Suns are reportedly among the teams where Butler would prefer to land in a trade. If the Heat are cool on Beal, however, then it's hard to see how a straight-up deal between the teams materializes.
