U.S. Army All-American Game: The Most Impressive Recruits and Biggest Busts

Edwin WeathersbyJun 7, 2018

The Army Game is a wrap and that is just about it for the "major" post-season All-Star games that we really dig for recruiting. It was a solid game and we got to see more of the best players in the country display their skills.

For this read, I'm going to just give you a couple players that caught my eye for good and bad reasons. Some impressed me, while I was a bit disappointed in others.

Let's get started.

Impressive: Kyle Murphy, OT

1 of 8

I watched as Murphy lined up at right tackle for most of the day. He impressed me with his set quickness, knee and showed great patience in his set.

Those are outstanding traits to have for an offensive tackle and college-level skills. Murphy clearly has been coached well and focuses on technique.

He goes down as an impressive player for me.

Impressive: Trey Williams and Stefon Diggs' Speed

2 of 8

We knew coming in that both players were speedsters with the football, but they impressed as return specialists. Trey Williams had several big returns that showed a great burst and good juice.

Stefon Diggs looked like he was on skates a few times with the ball. Diggs has been knocked by maybe not running a blazing 40, but I've always maintained that he's one of the fastest in the nation if you put him on the field with the ball in his hands.

Unimpressive: Chad Voytik, QB

3 of 8

Voytik had a solid diving touchdown run in the second half that showed good athleticism, but I was not impressed with his field vision. He missed some simple reads. Also, his size will be a burden at Pittsburgh as he will have to find a way to set up his own passing lanes.

Impressive: T.J. Yeldon, RB

4 of 8

Wow! How fluid did Yeldon look? He's the best back in Alabama and showed it today. He had a great senior season, and it translated in the game.

The 6'1", 200-pounder has a lean frame, but his speed was evident. Yeldon also displayed great run instincts. Alabama took a great player away from Auburn.

Unimpressive: Travis Blanks, DB

5 of 8

Now, I've been punding the table for Blanks all cycle, but he proved many people right in the game. Blanks lined up at cornerback, but he just looked too big, thick and straightlinish for the position.

He's been adamant that he's a cornerback, but that one-handed grab Dorial Green-Beckham put on him may have been the final straw to tell him he's best at free safety.

Impressive: D.J. Humphries, OT

6 of 8

Humphries was impressive today. He and Andrus Peat are my top two offensive tackles this year and both showed why. Humphries also flashed an "inside arm stabber" move on a couple snaps.

That's excellent technique and shows he is developing on schedule. His frame, length and athleticism were on shine today at left tackle. Humphries also had a key block on a first-half goal-line touchdown run.

Unimpressive: Cyler Miles, QB

7 of 8

Hate to seem like I'm picking on quarterbacks today, but Miles looked fine to me. It's just that I saw he needs to work on ball security in the pocket.

Mark Sanchez has the same type of hinderance, as he and Miles both handle the ball too wild, freely and with one hand in the pocket and when scrambling. This will lead to fumbles and strip sacks for Miles at Washington if not corrected soon.

Impressive: Shaq Thompson, DB

8 of 8

The best prospect coming into the game was wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham. The best player on the field today was Shaq Thompson.

Thompson had as good a game as Karlos Williams did in the 2011 Under Armour Game. Thompson flew upfield all day, played excellent speed and range and his size was intimidating.

California got themselves a future star.
