MLB.com defines the Rule 5 draft as follows (more information on how the draft works can be found via that link):
"Held each December, the Rule 5 Draft allows clubs without a full 40-man roster to select certain non-40-man roster players from other clubs. Clubs draft in reverse order of the standings from the previous season. Players signed at age 18 or younger need to be added to their club's 40-Man roster within five seasons or they become eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. Players who signed at age 19 or older need to be protected within four seasons."
Andrew Simon of MLB.com also gave an historical breakdown of the draft.
As far as this year's picks go, the defending NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies made the most use of the draft, adding right-handed pitcher Mike Vasil from the New York Mets organization in the Major League phase before picking up six more players in the Minor League phase.
However, Vasil was then traded for cash considerations.
Philadelphia only lost one player in this draft (right-handed pitcher Eiberson Castellano, to the Minnesota Twins).
Eighty-three players will be leaving their current teams' farm systems after this year's Rule 5 draft, and somehow, the New York Mets had over 10 percent of the 2024 pool.
A total of nine Mets minor leaguers were picked, with right-handed pitcher Joseph Yabbour notably leading the way in the minor league phase. Yabbour, a cousin of MLB brothers Ronald and Luisangel Acuña, is heading to the Chicago White Sox organization.
The Orioles, who have a notoriously loaded farm system, also lost seven players:
One of them is pitcher Juan Nunez, who's headed from the Baltimore Orioles to the San Diego Padres.
Other picks who got shoutouts on X include pitcher Evan Reifert (Tampa Bay Rays to Washington Nationals), pitcher Angel Bastardo (Boston Red Sox to Toronto Blue Jays) and pitcher Nate Lavender (New York Mets to Tampa Bay Rays).
While rare, it hasn't been uncommon for Rule 5 players to make an impact on the major league level, as Simon noted.
"In 2006, the pool of players eligible for the Rule 5 Draft shrunk, per the terms of a new CBA. Unprotected players now must be four or five seasons removed from signing, depending on whether they did so before turning 19.
"Since then, relatively few players have stuck with a drafting team and made an impact, though Josh Hamilton, R.A. Dickey, Darren O'Day, Brad Keller, Ender Inciarte and Mark Canha are among others who have been selected during that time. Success stories include relievers Joakim Soria (Padres to Royals, 2006), Hector Rondon (Cleveland to Cubs, 2012), Ryan Pressly (Red Sox to Twins, 2012), Anthony Santander (Cleveland to Orioles, 2016) and Garrett Whitlock (Yankees to Red Sox, 2020)."
Santander, of note, is a big-name free agent available this offseason after a 44-homer campaign. MLB Trade Rumors projects him to land a four-year, $80 million deal.
Maybe we'll see some players from this year's Rule 5 class enjoy great success like Santander. Until then, the hot stove season continues in December with the Winter Meetings continuing from Dallas.
