Rhodes and Owens' feud has reached new heights in recent weeks as the former friends gear up to settle their differences. On this past week's episode of SmackDown Live, Owens declared that he felt Rhodes betrayed him by teaming with Roman Reigns at the Bad Blood premium live event in October.
"For four years, I fought the Bloodline. Every week. Blood sweat and tears. I fought them all," Owens said in his fiery promo on Friday. "And they tried to end my career."
Saturday Night's Main Event is returning to NBC after previously airing on special occasions from 1985 to 1992. The special broadcast was brought back as part of the five-year media rights deal WWE signed with NBC Universal, which was announced last September and reported to be worth $1.4 billion.
The special on Dec. 14 will be simulcast on Peacock and will be held at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island, N.Y., the site of the first-ever Saturday Night's Main Event.
"Saturday Night's Main Event. Its return to NBC, this time in primetime for a live national audience. It's the perfect vehicle for two of our biggest stars ā WWE Champion Cody Rhodes vs. Kevin Owens ā and signals our level of ambition for this show," WWE's Chief Creative Officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque told Ryan Glasspiegel and Joseph Staszewski of the New York Post.
