NFL Issues Security Alert to Teams amid Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce Home Burglaries

Following burglaries at the homes of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, the NFL reportedly issued a security threat to all its teams.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Thursday the league issued a memo to team security directors and the players' union revealing the FBI is investigating a recent crime spree where organized criminals target the homes of professional athletes.

Pelissero noted the league, the NFL Players Association and team security forces are also monitoring the situation, and the belief is the spree can be tied to a South American crime syndicate.

"It's legit," a source familiar with the situation told Pelissero. "It's a transnational crime ring, and over the last three weeks, they've focused on NBA and NFL players, and it's all over the country."

Pelissero cited "multiple people with knowledge of the crimes" who stressed that the criminals wait until the homes are empty to burglarize. They do so by tracking team schedules and following players and their families on social media and often strike while games are ongoing.

He noted the plan is to "gain access and quickly steal items such as cash, jewelry, watches and handbags, focusing mainly on master bedrooms and closets."

With that as the backdrop, the NFL's alert offered suggestions such as avoiding posting on social media in real time and keeping valuables out of plain sight. It also advised players to install security systems at their homes.

While the burglarizing of the Mahomes and Kelce homes made the most headlines, former Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Linval Joseph, who is now a member of the Dallas Cowboys, also had his Minnesota home targeted.

TMZ Sports initially reported on the October burglaries at the homes of the Chiefs stars and noted the Kelce one happened shortly after the team's Monday Night Football Game against the New Orleans Saints started.

Police documents said the back door was damaged and $20,000 was taken.

As for Mahomes, the crime was reported to authorities around midnight on Oct. 6.
