U.S. Army All-American Bowl 2012: Breaking Down the In-Game Commitments

Randy ChambersJan 7, 2012

The U.S. Army All-American Bowl is all done and with that, a few more top prospects have fallen off the board. Several players waited to make their official decisions on national television.

There were a couple of surprises and some expected decisions. One thing for sure is that there are a few teams that are better today than they were yesterday.

Here are the breakdowns of the in-game commitments from the big game.

Deon Bush to Miami

1 of 14

The Miami Hurricanes may have missed out in the Under Armour Game, but they landed a solid player in safety Deon Bush.

Miami already had a safety commit in Rayshawn Jenkins, but Bush is much more talented. He's one of the more athletic and fastest safeties in this year's class. At 6'1", 175 pounds, he's very tall and long and is capable of covering a lot of ground on the field.

He's a good open-field tackler, has a knack for the big play and with his speed, can be a threat in the return game as well.

This was a good pickup for the Hurricanes and should keep their overall class in the top 10.

Brian Nance to Baylor

2 of 14

The Baylor Bears may be losing quite a bit after this season, including Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Robert Griffin III. But they have a recruiting class this year that they can be happy about moving forward.

It got even better with the commitment from linebacker Brian Nance.

Nance is an athletic guy who also has a knack for the big play as he often runs back interceptions for touchdowns. With his size at 6'3", 215 pounds, he'll likely play the outside linebacker position. He also has great tackling skills, which could make him a solid contributor on special teams.

This was a somewhat surprising pickup for the Bears, but they'll take any solid defensive player as that defense needs all the help it can get.

Nick Dawson to Louisville

3 of 14

Dawson is 6'2", 222 pounds and will likely play the inside linebacker position with his athleticism and speed.

He has great strength and is able to drop back in coverage well, as well as defend the run. He has great ball skills considering he was an effective running back.

Dawson had offers from Auburn, Clemson, Miami and USC, among others.

This was a big steal for the Cardinals.

Keith Brown to Louisville

4 of 14

Brown is the tough linebacker at 6'1", 225 pounds who will inflict pain with his tackling ability. But like Dawson, he also has great athleticism and a good combination of strength and power.

He has speed to cover both sides of the field, and great ball skills as he's returned an interception or two for a touchdown.

Brown was pursued by Florida, Florida State, Georgia and Michigan, among others.

This was another steal for the Cardinals as head coach Charlie Strong is really impressing lately by landing some of these top players.

Jordan Payton to California

5 of 14

California and their recruiting class just got that much better with the addition of wide receiver Jordan Payton.

Payton is a big body at 6'2", 200 pounds and is very good at making plays on the ball. He's not exactly a speedster but he's a very productive wide receiver in this year's class and is good at getting downfield.

He's tough to tackle in the open field and has quite a bit of upside.

He had offers from Notre Dame, USC, Florida and Penn State, among others.

Great pickup for an improving team in the Pac-12.

Jordan Diggs to South Carolina

6 of 14

Jordan Diggs is a big body at 6'0", 195 pounds at the safety position. He's physical, has great closing speed and awesome instincts on the football. He also has a motor that doesn't stop as he always plays until the whistle blows.

Diggs had offers from Notre Dame, Michigan State and Ohio State, among others.

Solid pickup for the Gamecocks, especially with them missing out on some top safeties already this year.

Tyriq McCord to Miami

7 of 14

McCord is an athletic defensive end who also has the ability to play the tight end position or is quick enough to play linebacker.

The thing that sticks out most with McCord is the passion with which he plays the game. This kid has a motor that doesn't stop and you must bring it on every play because he will.

He's the fourth defensive end to commit to the Hurricanes in this class and the second No. 4 star along with Jelani Hamilton.

It looked like McCord was going to go to South Carolina before shocking everybody and becoming a Hurricane.

Another big steal for Al Golden and company.

Kevon Seymour to USC

8 of 14

Seymour is a versatile player who is very athletic and has great ball skills. He has the ability to play either the cornerback or wide receiver position.

He even played quarterback a little bit in high school. With his speed at 5'11", 170 pounds he has the ability to be a major factor in the return game as well.

USC finally got in on the action and look for them once again to compete for the Pac-12 title.

Ellis McCarthy to California

9 of 14

This is another pickup for the Golden Bears as they dominated today with several top players committing to them.

McCarthy is one of the top defensive tackles in this year's class. At 6'5", 315 pounds, he is a mammoth of a human being and will clog up running lanes real well in the Pac-12.

Despite his huge size, he moves very well and draws a lot of attention on the offensive line.

Adding him to the defensive line will make everybody's job on that side of the ball that much easier.

Anthony Alford to Southern Miss

10 of 14

Alford is one of the top quarterback prospects in the country and is a dual-threat type.

He has excellent arm strength, great intangibles and of course can kill you with his legs. His ability to scramble and make plays when nothing is there can really frustrate a defense.

Overall this was a big pickup for the Golden Eagles as they try to build on a very successful season in C-USA.

Ellijah Shumate to Notre Dame

11 of 14

Shumate is a big boy at 6'0", 200 pounds and has the ability to play linebacker or even cornerback.

He's a very physical player who has become great at shedding blocks at the line of scrimmage. He isn't afraid to get his hands dirty and can become a ball hawk if he's used properly in the right defense.

Now the question is, do the Irish have way too much talent in their secondary? It's another great pickup for Notre Dame but the secondary may be getting a bit overcrowded.

Shaq Thompson to California

12 of 14

Thompson is considered the top safety prospect in the country, but he has the ability to play other positions like running back or wide receiver.

He is a fantastic athlete, with great instincts and solid speed. He's one of those players who could contribute right away and is another huge pickup for the Golden Bears.

He may just be the top defensive player in this whole class, and instantly makes the Bears a force in the Pac-12 for many years to come.

This conference will no longer just be about Oregon and USC.

Jonathan Bullard to Florida

13 of 14

Bullard is absolutely huge at 6'3", 255 pounds and plays just like the animal that is in his name.He moves very well for his size, clogs up running lanes well and simply overpowers offensive linemen.

He also has a motor that doesn't quit and plays the game with high energy and a lot of passion. Expect him to make an impact right away on this Florida team.

This signing should move Florida up from a top-10 class to possibly a top five.

Barry Sanders Jr. to Stanford

14 of 14

This commitment wasn't much of a surprise as it was rumored he would join the Cardinal.

Much like his father, he is a small running back at 5'10", 195 pounds, but he's extremely quick and makes defenders miss with ease. He's quick in and out of his cuts, has great body control and great vision of the field while he's running.

He may have a lot of work to do to fill his dad's shoes, but he will continue to keep Stanford on the map when Andrew Luck leaves. This is a very exciting pickup for the Cardinal.
