Draymond Green Rips 'Goofy' Grant Williams for Flagrant Foul on Celtics' Jayson Tatum
Count Draymond Green among those who didn't like Grant Williams' hard foul on Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum.
Green took to X to criticize Williams for his "goofy" play on Tatum when he plowed into the Celtics star in the fourth quarter of Boston's 125-109 win. Williams was ejected and received a flagrant 2 foul for his actions.
Tatum was bringing the ball up the court when Williams came in out of nowhere to swipe him, sending the Celtics star tumbling to the floor.
Some players will at least act like they are trying to go after the ball on a play like that, but Williams showed no indication he was trying to do that. Tatum initially appeared angry when he got up, but he walked right to the free-throw line rather than engage in the fracas.
Williams said after the game the play wasn't intentional and called Tatum "one of my closest friends in the league."
Celtics star Jaylen Brown disputed Williams' account that the play wasn't intentional during his postgame press conference.
"Like, what are we talking about? Y'all see the same play that I was seeing?" Brown said. "He hit him like it was a football play. Like, Ray Lewis coming across the middle or something. It is what it is. Grant know better than that."
Few players in NBA history know about a flagrant foul better than Green. He entered this season with 21 career flagrant fouls between the regular season and playoffs. The four-time All-Star has been suspended on four different occasions for various on-court violations.
So if Green thinks that what Williams did was out of line, he might want to listen.
The 25-year-old Williams spent the first four years of his NBA career with the Celtics from 2019 to '23. He was acquired by the Dallas Mavericks after the 2022-23 season in a sign-and-trade deal.
Dallas dealt Williams to the Hornets prior to the trade deadline last season.
