Video: Michael Irvin Says Cowboys' 'Only Hope' Is a Trade, Won't Win with This Roster

Count Dallas Cowboys legend Michael Irvin among those hoping his former team makes a move ahead of the Nov. 5 trade deadline.

"The only hope the Cowboys really have right now is if some kind of move is made at the trade deadline," he told TMZ Sports on Monday. "… They have to do something. It's bad right now."

Few know better what the Cowboys can be than Irvin, as he won three Super Bowl titles during his 12 seasons with the team. The wide receiver was a key figure in the golden age of the franchise in the 1990s and is a Hall of Famer as a result.

Yet the current version of the NFC East team looks nothing like the one that dominated during Irvin's career.

And there might not be a trade coming, as The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported earlier this month that owner Jerry Jones said the team will not be active ahead of the deadline.

Dallas is 3-4 on the season and is coming off a second straight loss. At least Sunday's 30-24 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers was close compared to a 44-19 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 2 and a 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 6.

The loss to the 6-1 Lions stands out in particular, as it underscored just how far away the Cowboys are from the top of the NFC.

The defense is 31st in the league in points allowed per game (28.3), while the offense hasn't seen much consistency. Quarterback Dak Prescott has 10 touchdown passes to eight interceptions, running back Rico Dowdle is yet to score a rushing touchdown and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is the only pass-catcher with more than 334 receiving yards through seven games.

Frankly, Dallas likely isn't a quick-fix trade away from realistically contending for a Lombardi Trophy this season.

But Irvin believes something has to happen before it is too late for a turnaround during the 2024 campaign.
