Trevon Diggs Has to 'Be Better' After Incident with Reporter, Cowboys' McCarthy Says

Scott PolacekOct 29, 2024

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was not pleased with how cornerback Trevon Diggs represented the organization after Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

"I think we have to be better in those moments. I always talk about staying on a high road," McCarthy said, per ESPN's Todd Archer. "That's part of our responsibility in this business. But I'm not ignorant or naive to the fact that this generation, that's part of the world they live in, the social media world. You have to manage that. That's part of being a professional athlete and that's part of representing this organization properly."

Diggs confronted a reporter about a social media post after the game:

The social media post questioned what Diggs was doing on a play that saw 49ers tight end George Kittle beat the defensive back down the sideline and just miss a touchdown:

"That's what you took from that?" Diggs said (h/t Archer). "Out of that whole play, that's what you took from that? You don't know football. You can't do nothing that I do. You can't go out there and do nothing. Stay in your lane, buddy. Stop trying me, dog."

For his part, Diggs addressed the situation during an appearance on The Edge with Micah Parsons:

"He was trying to use my name for clicks," Diggs said. "... I went up to him, and I just spoke how I felt. Feel like it was a lot of emotions. Just losing, coming out of the game fresh off the loss. … I just kind of let my emotions get the best of me."

The cornerback also said that he believed he played well in the loss and wasn't pleased with the entire situation and response.

He finished with five tackles and a pass defended.

There is surely plenty of frustration in Dallas at this point, as the NFC East team has lost two in a row and is just 3-4 on the season. Considering it is coming off three straight playoff appearances and had high expectations coming into the campaign, being in this position is surely not what anyone envisioned.

Things don't get much easier for the Cowboys, as their next four games are against teams in playoff position in the Atlanta Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans and Washington Commanders.

If they don't play better in that stretch, the playoffs could be out of the question heading into the closing portion of the year.
