NFL Playoff Picture 2024: Week 9 Standings, Wild-Card Info, Super Bowl Bracket Odds

Joe TanseyOct 28, 2024

The Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions look like the two most complete teams in the NFL through eight weeks.

Kansas City is the lone unbeaten squad in the league, and Detroit's offense has looked unstoppable over the last few weeks.

Kansas City and Detroit enter Monday with the lowest odds to win the Super Bowl. No one would be surprised, at least right now, if they squared off in the Big Game.

However, a lot of things are far from settled going into Week 9, including Detroit's spot atop the NFC North.

Clarity is more abundant in the AFC, where the Chiefs, Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans have healthy leads in their respective divisions. The primary focus for all three teams will be home-field advantage if they keep winning and their respective divisions do not improve.

Kansas City has again established itself as the class of the AFC.

Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes and Co. have a 1.5-game lead on the rest of the field and are currently the Super Bowl favorite.

Back-to-back home games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Denver Broncos should allow the Chiefs to move to 9-0 before they visit Buffalo in Week 11.

The Buffalo Bills should already have their sights set on the No. 1 seed in the AFC because of how poor the rest of the AFC East has looked.

Buffalo hosts the Miami Dolphins in Week 9, and while Tua Tagovailoa is back, the Dolphins still have some flaws that showed up in Sunday's loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

A win over Miami would set the Bills on cruise control on top of the division and allow them to focus solely on chasing down the Chiefs for home-field advantage.

The Houston Texans will have a say in the hunt for the No. 1 seed as well. They already own the head-to-head tiebreaker on the Bills and could earn one over the Chiefs in Week 16.

Like the Bills, the Texans will likely have more focus on the top seed than the race for the division title in the coming weeks because of the gap in the AFC South.

The AFC North will come down to the wire between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens.

The Steelers are expected to go into their Week 9 bye with a Monday night win over the New York Giants. Pittsburgh and Baltimore meet in Weeks 11 and 16, and the Steelers play all six of their division games after the bye.

Detroit is the clear team to beat in the NFC.

However, the Lions could be taken off that pedestal as early as Week 9, when they face the Green Bay Packers.

Green Bay is also a half-game back of Detroit in the NFC North, where all four teams are within two games of each other.

The Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears will also have a say in the divisional title race, and there is a chance all four NFC North teams make the playoffs.

Only two NFC East teams, the Washington Commanders and Philadelphia Eagles, look like playoff contenders and there's a good chance the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drop off with all of their injuries.

The NFC West still has to sort itself out, but the assumption is the San Francisco 49ers eventually take control after their Week 9 bye.

The 49ers have a tough second half of the regular season, but they should start with two wins over Tampa Bay and Seattle to create some momentum going into the Week 12 clash in Green Bay with the Packers.
