NBA Rumors: 'Many Within' Mavs Feel Jason Kidd 'Uniquely Suited' to Coach Luka, Kyrie
As the Dallas Mavericks begin their quest for a second straight run to the NBA Finals, the team remains confident in head coach Jason Kidd's ability to continue leading the star pair of Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving.
According to ESPN's Tim MacMahon, "Many within the Dallas organization believe that Kidd is uniquely suited to bring out the best in the superstar duo of Dončić and Irving, who have both butted heads with their head coaches at times, as Kidd did on occasion throughout the course of his two-decade playing career."
Irving told MacMahon that he and the other players on the team respect Kidd's experience and the way he approaches his leadership role.
"Outside of him being a Hall of Famer and being like a well trusted, high-level-IQ thinker?" Irving said. "He's also being human enough to get to know what irks a player and what makes a player go in a positive manner."
Dončić and Irving spearheaded an improbable run through the playoffs last season that saw the Mavs defeat three of the top four teams in the Western Conference on their way to making the NBA Finals for the first time since their championship win in 2011.
Dallas lost to the Boston Celtics in five games, but it seems like the team's future is still bright. Four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson headlined a list of key offseason acquisitions that will try to ensure that last year's run was no fluke.
The Mavs are set to open the 2024-25 season on Thursday night against the San Antonio Spurs at 7:30 p.m. ET on TNT.
