Cowboys' Mike McCarthy on Jerry Jones' Criticism: Don't Think We've Had 'Bad Plays'

Adam WellsOct 23, 2024

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has pushed back on recent comments from Jerry Jones about the team's plays and play-calling so far this season.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, McCarthy acknowledged he hasn't seen Jones' exact quote but doesn't think they have run "bad plays."

Jones' comments came during his weekly appearance on Audacy's 105.3 The Fan (h/t DallasCowboys.com's Tommy Yarrish) when he said what "we should be looking at is we're designing bad plays, or we're designing bad concepts."

The Cowboys owner also put some of the blame on the poor execution of the plays.

Jones has been taking some not-so-subtle shots at the team in recent weeks. During the same radio interview, he said Derrick Henry probably wouldn't be having the same success this season if he signed with the Cowboys that he is with the Baltimore Ravens because of the difference in offensive schemes.

The pressure was already incredibly high for McCarthy coming into this season. Jones elected not to extend his contract during the offseason, so he is coaching on the final year of his original deal signed in January 2020.

Things have only been made harder for McCarthy with the Cowboys off to a rough start this season and Jones continuing to comment publicly on those issues.

The Cowboys have the second-worst defense in the NFL by points allowed per game and rank 20th in scoring offense. Two of their three losses have been by a combined total of 63 points.

For all of the issues they've had so far, the Cowboys (3-3) can get back over the .500 mark coming out of their bye this week. They will take on the San Francisco 49ers at Levi's Stadium on Sunday Night Football.

McCarthy and his staff can show they have taken lessons from their time off if some of their issues look better in a high-profile game against another NFC playoff contender that is also struggling.
