Alex Rodriguez: Judge, Yankees vs. Ohtani, Dodgers 'Best' World Series in 25 Years

Adam WellsOct 22, 2024

If the idea of a New York Yankees-Los Angeles Dodgers matchup featuring the two biggest stars in MLB on opposite sides plus several other superstars on both rosters wasn't enough to get you excited for the World Series, Alex Rodriguez is here to add to the hype machine.

Speaking to TMZ Sports, Rodriguez said this Fall Classic is going to be "great" and called it the "best" matchup in 25 years.

We can probably assume that Rodriguez wasn't specifically recalling the 1999 World Series between the Yankees and Atlanta Braves as a good matchup because it wasn't. Both teams were loaded with star players, but the series ended in a four-game sweep for the Bronx Bombers.

The Yankees outscored Atlanta 21-9, with only one game decided by fewer than three runs.

Ohtani and Judge are arguably the biggest stars MLB has had since the end of Derek Jeter's career in 2014. The fact that they also play in the two biggest media markets in the United States figures to make this one of the most-watched World Series matchups in recent memory.

ESPN's Dave Schoenfield noted before the 2019 World Series that since MLB introduced the League Championship Series round in 1969 the record for Hall of Famers playing in a World Series is seven done twice in 1983 (Baltimore Orioles vs. Philadelphia Phillies) and 1996 (Yankees vs. Braves).

This Yankees-Dodgers matchup could potentially match that total. Judge, Ohtani, Juan Soto, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman are on that trajectory right now. Giancarlo Stanton and Gerrit Cole are more on the fringes of Hall-of-Fame territory at this point, but both still have time to bolster their case.

Stanton's postseason performance, both this season and throughout his career, are going to help his case. He's a .269/.342/.677 hitter with 16 homers in 130 playoff at-bats.

Clayton Kershaw, while a no-doubt Hall of Famer, wasn't included in this group since he's unable to pitch in the playoffs due to a toe injury.

Even in a season without any dominant teams like we've had so many times in recent years—this was the first time since 2014 no team reached the 100-win mark—the Yankees and Dodgers finished as the top seed in their respective league.

Now, the star-studded Yankees and Dodgers will meet to determine the World Series champion. This is the 12th all-time meeting between the two clubs in the Fall Classic, but first since 1981. New York won eight of the previous 11 matchups.

Game 1 between the Yankees and Dodgers will be played on Friday at 8:08 p.m. ET.
