Jets Rumors: Davante Adams Restructures Contract After Trade to Help 2024 Salary Cap
Wide receiver Davante Adams is restructuring his contract following his trade to the New York Jets, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport reported the move will provide the team with some short-term salary cap relief. The two sides will probably need to strike a similar bargain next year considering his contract originally called for him to count for $36.3 million against the cap.
The restructure is a little surprising because the Jets had enough cap space to take on Adams' prorated salary ($11.7 million) for the rest of the year. They didn't need to lower his number now, and doing so will only tack on a higher long-term cost to their payroll.

Biggest Questions Surrounding 2026 NFL Season After the Draft 🤔
Some sort of renegotiation is inevitable because both sides stand to benefit.
Adams has no more guaranteed money left on his deal, so New York could theoretically release him in the offseason at little cost. It's easy to foresee a scenario in which quarterback Aaron Rodgers chooses to retire and general manager Joe Douglas cuts bait on the wideout he acquired with the four-time MVP in mind.
Reworking his contract would allow Adams to have a little more financial security, while the Jets could lessen their cap burden.
From the moment the franchise hitched its wagons to Rodgers, it basically adopted a year-to-year mindset. It's difficult to build a long-term vision when the roster is centered around an aging star who has in the past waffled about his NFL future.
With the Adams trade, Douglas might be looking only at 2024 while keeping multiple options on the table for 2025 and beyond.
