College Football Recruiting: Juniors Light Up U.S. Army All American Combine
While the Class of '12 gets to strut their stuff on the field on Saturday, the future stars of the 2013 recruiting class took the field today at the Alamo Dome to compete against each other.
There were athletes from all over the country in attendance. From Washington to New Jersey and all the way up to Canada, all of North America was represented at the U.S. Army All American Combine in San Antonio.
The juniors tested and took part in one-on-one drills in order to show their athleticism and their ability to take coaching. There were standouts on both sides of the football.
At quarterback, Cameron Birse from San Ramon (CA) High School showed a very nice arm in passing drills.Careron Luper from Auburn (AL) High has nice size and an outstanding arm. He should be one of the top prospects in the South.
At running back, T.J. Johnson from Island Coast High School in Cape Coral, Florida stole the show. Johnson ripped off a 4.4 forty-yard dash in the morning. No one was able to cover him in the one-on-one passing drills in the afternoon.
Running back Tevin Horton of John Curtis (LA) High School was another standout in the passing drills. He was smooth in and out of his breaks and showed solid hands and great speed.
As one would expect, a number of wide receivers impressed in the passing drills. Robert Foster from Central Valley High School in Rochester, PA lit up the competition in the one on one drills. He was one of the top overall performers of the combine.
Quan Jones and Marcell Ateman of Wylie East High School both showed why they are considered among the top 20 prospects in the state of Texas for 2013. Jones is a long receiver who glides down the field. Kumani Armstead of Richland High School was another impressive prospect from the DFW Metroplex.
David Robinson's son Corey participated in the combine. Corey Robinson is listed as a wide receiver and showed nice body control. But he does not look to have legit division one speed at wide receiver and will probably move to tight end in college.
A number of defensive linemen stood out in pass rush drills with the offensive linemen.
Da'Shawn Hand from Woodbridge (VA) High School showed great quickness in his pass rush.
No one was able to block Dajuan Drennon from Timber Creek (NJ) High School. He won in every attempt against the offensive linemen.
Demontrai Lewis from Lufkin (TX) High School was explosive off the snap in the pass rush drills. He is only around 200 pounds right now and would likely have to redshirt to add weight in college.
Vincent Taylor from San Antonio (TX) Madison High School showed good power in his bull rush.
Sekou Clark showed nice quickness off the ball in the pass rush drills. He will replace 2012 blue chipper Mario Edwards Jr. in the starting lineup at defensive end for Denton (TX) Ryan High School in the fall.
William Udeh from Coppell (TX) High School was probably the most physically impressive of an impressive group. Udeh is about 230 pounds of muscle who explodes out of his stance when the ball is snapped. He made some of the opposing OL in passing drills look like they were standing still. Udeh looks like a major college football defensive end right now.
At linebacker, Marcus Robinson of Memphis (TN) East High School turned some heads. He was so good in pass coverage that the coaches kept giving him extra reps to see if anyone could beat him. No one did. He showed exceptional coverage ability for a high school linebacker.
The best cover corner on the field was probably Eric Church of Timber Creek High School in Slickersville, NJ. He showed great hips and had good speed. He and Drennon should team up to lead the Timber Creek defense in 2012.
It was a great day for recruitniks, as plenty of new faces in the 2013 class made names for themselves.
