Patriots Podcast Host Retracts Viral 'Mutiny' Rumor amid Controversy, Censorship
A New England Patriots podcast host is backtracking after landing in hot water following comments that suggested there was dissension within the team's locker room.
Evan Lazar, who co-hosts the Catch 22 podcast produced by the Patriots, said this week that the team is "teetering on a mutiny" because of veteran backup quarterback Jacoby Brissett continuing to start over rookie Drake Maye. However, the replay of the podcast was deleted from YouTube and social media, and the audio of the podcast was edited to remove the "mutiny" comment, as noted by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
Following the controversy, Lazar appeared on 98.5 The Sports Hub to clarify the situation.
"I'll fully admit I got a little carried away today on the podcast," Lazar said. "The word I used — 'mutiny' — like, there's no mutiny in the Patriots' locker room. And, like I said, I got carried away, and that was my bad. You know, that's not what was going on."
Lazar went on to add that he still believes Patriots players are hoping to see Maye take over the reins from Brissett sooner rather than later.
"But I just think the biggest thing that I worry about — and this is just me personally, my opinion — is how long the rest of the players in the locker room are gonna sit there and take their lumps while Drake Maye waits in the wings, and waits for his turn," Lazar said. "So, that was just my opinion, and it came out a little stronger than I intended it to."
The Patriots have lost each of their last three games and carry a 1-3 record into Sunday's matchup against the Miami Dolphins. Brissett has thrown for 536 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while completing 60.4 percent of his passes.
If Brissett continues to struggle, there will be more talking heads in New England clamoring for Maye to see some more time on the field going forward.
