Frank Vogel Joins Jason Kidd's Mavericks Staff After Lakers, Suns HC Stints
Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd confirmed on Wednesday while speaking with reporters that former Orlando Magic, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns head coach Frank Vogel is "part of our coaching staff" and will be serving as a coaching consultant.
"It took a lot of begging," Kidd joked, "but he was talked into it and I'm happy he said yes."
Kidd, 51, worked under Vogel for two years as an assistant coach on the Lakers between the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons, winning a title in the Orlando bubble during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the pair will be reunited in Dallas.
"Being able to work for Frank was something that helped me with my coaching..." Kidd told reporters on Wednesday. "Hopefully, we can win another title together."
Vogel, 51, has gone 488-422 in parts of 12 seasons as a head coach, leading his teams to the postseason eight times and a title in the 2019-20 campaign. His time in Phoenix was short-lived, however, as the Suns axed him after just one year, a 49-33 campaign in which the Suns were beset by injuries and poor depth but also never quite came together around the big three of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal.
He was replaced by former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer this summer.
As for the Mavericks, the team is fresh off a run to the NBA Finals behind the star duo of Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving, ultimately losing to the Boston Celtics in five games. The team also made a splash in free agency, adding longtime Golden State Warriors sharpshooter Klay Thompson to the mix in a sign-and-trade deal.
Now, the experienced Vogel will offer the coaching staff another perspective to consider as it seeks to win a title.
