Report: Anthony Richardson 'Hopes to Play' for Colts vs. Jaguars amid Hip Injury

Julia StumbaughOct 2, 2024

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson "hopes to play" in Sunday's road game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler described Richardson as "day-to-day with an injury to his hip area" after leaving in the first quarter of last Sunday's Week 4 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers with an injury.

ESPN's Stephen Holder reported on Wednesday that Richardson was "feeling much, much better" ahead of the Colts' first practice of Week 5.

Fowler noted that veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, who threw for two touchdowns and no interceptions in his relief appearance against the Steelers, "is under no illusions" that he will start if Richardson is healthy.

Richardson returned to the field after his initial departure from the game, only to take another hit before exiting the game for good.

He returned to the sideline in the second quarter but did not step in again for Flacco, telling reporters after the win that he was feeling "just a little soreness."

NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe initially described the injury on Sunday as a "right hip pointer," while the network's Tom Pelissero reported on Monday that Richardson was "considered day to day" with strains to his oblique and abdominal muscles.

The Colts have yet to confirm the precise nature of Richardson's injury.

Steichen told reporters ahead of Wednesday's practice that Richardson would "possibly" participate "on a limited basis."

The head coach added that "the plan" is to have Richardson play on Sunday, and that the quarterback could potentially start even if he does not practice in the days leading up to the contest (h/t Kevin Bowen of Indianapolis' 93.5 & 107.5 The Fan.)

Bowen noted, however, that Richardson has yet to make an NFL appearance following a week of missed or limited practice.

Richardson's NFL career has so far been largely defined by injury. The No. 4 pick made just four starts during his rookie 2023 season, three of which he left early, including the contest during which he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.

The quarterback's participation status in Wednesday's practice will be the first signal as to whether he could be missing time for the second straight season.
