Lions' Dan Campbell: 'I Feel Awful' for Not Giving Jared Goff Ball from Perfect Game

Adam WellsOct 1, 2024

It turns out going 18-of-18 for 292 yards with touchdowns as a passer and catching a touchdown pass isn't good enough to earn a game ball from Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell explained after Monday's 42-29 win over the Seattle Seahawks he felt terrible for not giving Jared Goff one of the game balls from the victory.

"I just gave the game ball to somebody else, so I feel awful," Campbell said. "I knew he played a heck of a game. I did not realize he was perfect. I did not know he was literally 18-for-18, but I knew he played really well. You could feel it. He really found his rhythm early."

Goff had the most attempts in a game without an incompletion in NFL history. He was also on the receiving end of a seven-yard touchdown pass from Amon-Ra St. Brown in the third quarter.

Jameson Williams and Kerby Joseph were the Lions players who were awarded game balls in the locker room. It's hard to argue with those choices. Williams had a 70-yard touchdown reception to put Detroit up 35-20 late in the third quarter when the Seahawks were trying to mount a comeback.

Joseph had a team-high nine combined tackles, one tackle for loss and picked off a Geno Smith pass on Seattle's final drive to seal the win.

Even though Goff completed all 18 of his attempts and accounted for three touchdowns, he did make a mistake late in the fourth quarter to give the Seahawks some life. The three-time Pro Bowler was sacked by Dre'Mont Jones for a safety to cut the lead to 42-29 with just over two minutes to play when the Lions were trying to run out the clock.

That was also the last meaningful snap Goff took in the game, so perhaps Campbell had that on his mind when he was addressing the team afterward.

Since the Lions' loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2 in which he had two turnovers, Goff is 36-of-41 for 491 yards with four touchdowns and one interception in the past two games.

The previous record for most attempts in a game without an incompletion was 10 done by Kurt Warner for the Arizona Cardinals in 2005. He did it in a game that he left in the second quarter due to a knee injury.

Despite the historic game for Goff, the NFL won't recognize it as the single-game record for completion percentage because league rules require at least 20 attempts to qualify.

At least Goff can celebrate the Lions winning since he didn't get a game ball from his coach and can't get recognized in the history books by the NFL due to an arbitrary minimum-attempt requirement.
