Video: Mark Cuban Predicts NBA Player Will Eventually Sign $1B Contract
Dallas Mavericks minority governor Mark Cuban believes that an NBA player will sign a $1 billion contract someday, making his remarks on the Club Shay Shay podcast with Shannon Sharpe.
Cuban noted that his billion-dollar prediction "presumes that TV keeps going up the way it is" but added that we will "see $100 million per year shortly."
The NBA's new TV deal notably has an impact on the salary cap, as noted by James Dator for SB Nation.
"Players must receive 50 percent of any media deal under the collective bargaining agreement reached with the NBPA, which runs through the 2029-30 season. It's important to note that funds from the new TV deal wouldn't be reflected in the salary cap until the 2025-26 season, at which point they would be rolled out as incremental 10 percent increases year-over-year for the life of the deal."
In the meantime, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum became the first player in NBA history to sign a contract worth over $300 million this offseason when he inked a five-year, $313,933,410 max extension.
Earlier this year, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry became the first player in league history to sign a deal that will pay more than $60 million in a season thanks to his one-year, $62.6 million extension to cover the 2026-27 campaign.
The next monster payday should be for Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Dončić next offseason. ESPN's Bobby Marks provided the details.
Ultimately, it's certainly not impossible to see a billion-dollar contract down the NBA road, although it might be a while. A half-billion has not been eclipsed yet in the Association. Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani owns the biggest contract in sports at $700 million.
