Vince McMahon Releases Statement Criticizing Upcoming WWE Netflix Doc 'Mr. McMahon'

Doric SamSep 23, 2024

Ahead of Wednesday's release of Netflix's Mr. McMahon documentary, former WWE chairman Vince McMahon released a statement criticizing the project as not completely factual.

McMahon wrote that the documentary "falls short and takes the predictable path of conflating the 'Mr. McMahon' character with my true self, Vince."

Netflix announced that the Mr. McMahon documentary "covers McMahon's transformation of WWE from a small, regional business into a global entertainment powerhouse, and the explosive sexual misconduct allegations that led to his eventual resignation."

The company released the trailer earlier this month, giving fans a teaser of the in-depth look at the 79-year-old's life and career:

Director Chris Smith told Netflix that the production of the documentary was affected by the lawsuit filed by Janel Grant earlier this year accusing McMahon of sexual misconduct and sex trafficking that led to a federal investigation.

"Over the four years of production, the story evolved in truly shocking ways, culminating in some extremely harrowing allegations," Smith said. "The final product is a revealing documentary that we believe offers a rich and nuanced portrait of the man and the complex legacy he left behind."

McMahon disputed those notions in his statement, writing, "A lot has been misrepresented or left out entirely in an effort to leave viewers intentionally confused." He added that "the producers use a lawsuit based on an affair I ended as evidence that I am, in fact, 'Mr. McMahon.'"

In addition to McMahon participating in the documentary, the producers interviewed WWE legends such as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Hulk Hogan, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, John Cena, Paul "Triple H" Levesque and more. All six episodes of Mr. McMahon will be released on Netflix on Wednesday.
