Eagles' Gardner-Johnson Calls Saints' Hit on DeVonta Smith 'Dirtiest S--t I Ever Saw'

Andrew PetersSep 22, 2024

Philadelphia Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson didn't hesitate to call out New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Khristian Boyd for his hit that left DeVonta Smith concussed on Sunday.

Per ESPN's Tim McManus, Gardner-Johnson called the hit a "cheap shot" and said the Saints were "playing dirty."

"Man, that's the dirtiest s--t I ever saw in football, bro," Gardner-Johnson said.. "Y'all obviously saw forward progression was stopped. For them to take a cheap shot on one of our key players, it goes to show what type of team that is. They're front-runners."

The play occurred in the fourth quarter of the Eagles' 15-12 win after Smith caught a short pass from Jalen Hurts. Saints' defenders swarmed Smith and pushed him backward before Boyd came in from behind to make a big hit, one that ultimately ended Smith's game earlier than he hoped.

Despite the blindside hit, there were no flags thrown on the play.

While Gardner-Johnson was quick to call out his former team for what he thought was a dirty play, his teammates agreed it was dirty but were hesitant to call it intentional.

"Did I think it was dirty? Yeah. Did I think it was intentional? No -- ah, I don't f--king know. I've got to watch it," said left tackle Jordan Mailata. "I'm conflicted as you can tell. I hope Smitty is OK."

Boyd sent out a message on social media clarifying that he had no intention of hurting Smith on the blindside hit.

"I would never deliberately try to give someone a serious injury," he posted on his Instagram story. "Just tried to make a play on the ball. Get well."

Deliberate or not, the Eagles could be without Smith as they take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday. It would potentially leave them without their two best receivers as A.J. Brown continues to recover from a hamstring injury that forced him to miss the last two games.
