Chiefs' Chris Jones Says 'This is Some BS' After NFL Removes a Half-Sack from Stats

Joseph ZuckerSep 18, 2024

Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones wasn't happy to see his stat line from Week 2 amended by the NFL.

The league removed a half-sack from Jones in the Chiefs' 26-25 win over the Cincinnati Bengals and credited teammate George Karlaftis with a full sack, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Jones was less than enthused:

The five-time Pro Bowler was originally listed as helping Karlaftis to bring down Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow with 5:07 left in the second quarter.

Even in the moment, he seemed to know it was a potentially flimsy decision. A video shared by the Chiefs showed Jones saying "my hand was on there" and "they gave me half of George's sack." He also recounted an instance when the shoe was on the other foot.

Rest assured, Jones isn't coming away totally empty-handed:

Agonizing over half-sacks might seem like small potatoes, but defensive linemen often have sack-related incentives written into their contracts. Last year, Jones earned $1.25 million when he recorded his 10th sack and triggered a bonus written into his deal.

Based on what has been reported, it's unclear if there are similar stakes to his overall total in 2024.
