Tom Brady Responds to Scott Hanson Apology After Comments on Fox NFL Debut

Joseph ZuckerSep 9, 2024

Tom Brady is seemingly open to criticism after his broadcasting debut.

NFL Network's Scott Hanson apologized on social media after offering some advice for Brady on the fly during the legendary quarterback's debut for Fox Sports on Sunday.

While hosting RedZone on Sunday, Hanson suggested that Brady has "got to get more excited than that in the booth" when reacting as the Dallas Cowboys were lining up a 71-yard field-goal attempt in their 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns. He followed up Monday morning to call the remark "unfair & inconsiderate."

Brady responded saying no apology was necessary in his lighthearted response:

The Athletic's Andrew Marchand thought the critique, while made in jest by Hanson, was off-base because Brady "showed enthusiasm" on occasion throughout the game.

Instead, Marchand wrote the retired star "offered too much remedial, player-speak" and is still basically finding his sea legs. Brady will need time to build a rapport with play-by-play partner Kevin Burkhardt and understand the finer nuances of broadcasting.

The trouble for the 47-year-old and his employer is that he's getting paid $37.5 million annually, and the hype surrounding his debut was almost no different than if he had actually been playing.

That's going to make viewers predisposed to judge him more harshly than they otherwise would. Peruse social media and you're bound to find a lot of reactions like these:

Brady could prove to be perfectly fine as an analyst, providing some valuable insight while not standing out for the most part.

But Fox is clearly banking on him being more than perfectly fine and wants him to be the face of its NFL coverage. Because of that, the seven-time Super Bowl champion is likely to be the most scrutinized announcer in sports.
