Kirk Cousins 'Disappointed' After Loss to Justin Fields, Steelers in Falcons Debut

Zach BacharSep 8, 2024

Kirk Cousins wasn't happy with his performance after the Atlanta Falcons' offense struggled during a Week 1 defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

Cousins told reporters after the 18-10 loss that he felt "disappointed."

"I was disappointed," he said, per ESPN's Marc Raimondi. "Certainly disappointed. You always go out there with an expectation that you're going to play at a high level, and we didn't play up to our standard today."

Cousins finished 16-of-26 for 155 yards and one touchdown to go along with two interceptions. He was also sacked twice.

The Falcons weren't facing the Steelers' No. 1 quarterback, as Russell Wilson was declared out with a calf injury after he was previously named Pittsburgh's starter on Aug. 28.

Justin Fields replaced Wilson, with the former first-round pick racking up 156 pass yards to go along with 57 rush yards. He helped the Steelers keep the chains moving on the ground and control the clock, as Pittsburgh possessed the ball for more than 10 minutes longer than Atlanta.

Cousins was projected to provide a massive boost to the Falcons' offense after signing a four-year, $180 million contract with the team in free agency. It's worth noting that Sunday marked his first start since a torn Achilles ended his 2023 campaign, although he still underperformed expectations.

The veteran signal-caller will look to bounce back in Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
