Russell Wilson Out Injured, Justin Fields to Start for Steelers vs. Falcons in Week 1
Pittsburgh Steelers veteran quarterback Russell Wilson is inactive for Sunday's season opener against the Atlanta Falcons because of a calf injury, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
That means Justin Fields will start in his place.

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮
Wilson, 35, was signed to the Steelers this offseason after the Denver Broncos released him following two disastrous—and very expensive—seasons. He was brought in under the belief that he would likely be the starter, though he competed throughout the summer with Fields, who was also acquired this offseason in a trade with the Chicago Bears.
Wilson was the more experienced and decorated option. The nine-time Pro Bowler and one-time Super Bowl champion was one of the NFL's better quarterbacks during his 10 years with the Seattle Seahawks.
He hasn't appeared to be that player since, though coach Mike Tomlin indicated that Wilson would be in the driver's seat to win the starting gig.
"We're not resistant to competition, but as I've mentioned several times of late, I just think it's appropriate to establish positioning... and the term that I've used is Russell has pole position," Tomlin told reporters in March. "And why do I use that term? Because during this time where we are not formally working, I just think it's beneficial. His experience in the National Football League, his process has been honed and perfected."
Yet the injury means Fields will start.
Fields has been one of the most dynamic players in the NFL when he tucks and runs, providing plenty of highlights during his three seasons with the Bears. Where he's struggled is to quickly read defenses and make decisions, often taking too many sacks by holding onto the ball and extending the play rather than hitting his first read.
The hope in Pittsburgh was that a fresh start might help fix some of those issues. He'll have the chance to do so out on the field with Wilson sidelined to start the new campaign.
