RVD Open to John Cena Match; Matt Hardy Talks WWE Return; Rumors on Cedric Alexander
Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe.
RVD Expresses Willingness for WWE Comeback with Cena
John Cena will embark on what's being billed on a farewell tour with WWE in 2025, though nothing is ever set in stone with the wrestling business.
Assuming this is Cena's final run in the squared circle, it could be an opportunity to renew old rivalries. Rob Van Dam, one such past antagonist, responded Saturday to a fan on X and said he'd consider a one-off match:
WWE's One Night Stand show in 2006 helped provide one of the most iconic images of Cena's illustrious career. Facing a hostile crowd inside Hammerstein Ballroom, a defiant champion walked down to the ring with his head down and holding the belt aloft. The biggest babyface in the promotion deftly assumed the bad guy role.
While Cena ultimately lost to Van Dam, the event reinforced his status as the biggest star in WWE.
As much as RVD played a role in Cena's rise, his lengthy hiatus from WWE makes a comeback unlikely. He hasn't wrestled for the company since 2014, showing up for a variety of promotions since then.
Hardy Doesn't Close Door on WWE Return
Speaking of aging veterans entertaining one last run with WWE, Matt Hardy adopted the "never say never" mindset when addressing whether he'd return to the federation or even go back to AEW.
"You never rule anything out. You never close any doors on anything," he said on his Ask Matt Hardy ANYTHING! podcast (via H Jenkins of Ringside News). "You just do your best, you keep your chin up, you keep moving forward, and you try and speak as honestly and as transparently as possible. So it's one of those things, if we ended up back at AEW to do something, yeah, we wouldn't be opposed to that, especially if it's something that sounded really, really good, that we were very intrigued by. Then, once again, with WWE, there's still been some ongoing conversation with WWE. So yeah, I mean, anything can happen in the extreme life of Matt Hardy."
Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp reported in August that Matt and Jeff Hardy had visited with WWE officials during SummerSlam weekend in Cleveland, Ohio. Rather than discussing a possible Hardy Boyz reunion, though, the brothers were filming footage that will be used in future projects for the company.
Matt and Jeff came back to great fanfare at WrestleMania 33 in 2017.
Their run slowly fizzled out, though, thanks in large part to Jeff's knee injury in 2019.
There's no question fans maintain a level of nostalgia toward the legendary tag team. Whether they could occupy a meaningful role on the WWE roster at this point is another matter.
Alexander Signed WWE Extension in Spring
Wrestling fans won't be seeing Cedric Alexander anywhere else for the foreseeable future. Sapp reported Saturday that Alexander signed a new contract with WWE in the spring.
The 35-year-old debuted with WWE in 2016 as part of the Cruiserweight Classic. Since then, he has carved out a regular place on the midcard.
Alexander won the Cruiserweight Championship tournament in 2018 and was a top star on 205 Live. By 2020, he joined Bobby Lashley, MVP and Shelton Benjamin in The Hurt Business, combining with Benjamin to become the Raw tag team champions at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs that year.
While Alexander has been treading water for the most part since the members of The Hurt Business went their separate ways, WWE still sees him as a valuable piece of the roster.
