NBA Rumors: Markieff Morris, Mavs Agree to Contract for 2024-25 Season

Andrew PetersSep 7, 2024

Markieff Morris will suit up for a third season with the Dallas Mavericks in 2024.

The veteran power forward agreed to a contract with the Mavs on Saturday, per The Athletic's Shams Charania. According to Charania, re-signing Morris has been a priority for Dallas this offseason, and the Mavs will regain his valuable veteran presence as they pursue another NBA Finals appearance.

Morris has been in Dallas since the 2022-23 season when he was traded from the Brooklyn Nets as part of the Kyrie Irving blockbuster.

Morris averaged 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game last season, playing 8.3 minutes per game as he appeared in 26 contests. He played just one postseason game, putting up three points and four rebounds in the Mavs' Game 4 win over the Boston Celtics in the Finals.

While Morris hasn't played a major role on the court, his veteran status on a young Dallas team has been invaluable.

Morris has never reached star status in the NBA, but he's seen just about everything there is to see in the league. As a journeyman who has played for eight different teams, he's been a part of rebuilds, middling teams looking to make the jump and an NBA Finals-winning team in 2020 with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The title window is open for the Mavericks after they reached the Finals last year, but there's still plenty of room for growth, which became evident as the Celtics completed a gentleman's sweep of Dallas on their way to a title.

The Mavericks made a splash this offseason when they completed a sign-and-trade with the Golden State Warriors for veteran sharpshooter Klay Thompson. Now, they're working on fine-tuning what they hope will be a championship-contending roster ahead of the start of the season in October.
