NFL Rumors: Latest on 49ers' Trent Williams Contract Holdout After Brandon Aiyuk Deal
With Brandon Aiyuk's contract situation settled, the San Francisco 49ers can now shift focus towards Trent Williams.
The 49ers signed Aiyuk to a four-year, $120 million deal with $76 million guaranteed. This ended his "hold-in," but San Francisco is still without Williams, who has been fully holding out and is being fined $50,000 per day.
During an appearance on The Insiders, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the latest:
"If there is any player who is holding out who is prideful and who has made a ton of money to carry this through, it's Trent Williams," Rapoport said. "I think there is a deal to be done here, he's going to, I'm sure, have to be among the highest-paid tackles in the NFL. He has a lot of leverage because he is an excellent player."
While Aiyuk is a huge addition to the 49ers receiving core, Williams is a necessary presence on the offensive line, with ESPN's Dan Orlovsky stating that the team "cannot weather a single moment without Trent Williams" during an appearance on NFL Live.
Williams is entering his 13th season in the NFL and has been named to 11 Pro Bowls and been designated as first-team All-Pro in the last three seasons. He anchors a 49ers line that has helped the offense have a dynamic rushing and passing attack with playmakers like Aiyuk.
Williams has three seasons remaining on his current contract and has mad $168.6 million in his career. His frustration stems from his salary ranking, as he is currently the sixth-highest paid lineman, per Spotrac
Tristan Wirfs has the highest average annual value at $28.1 million, which came from an extension he signed this offseason. With Williams experience and importance, this is likely the range he is looking for.
With or without Williams, San Francisco will open the 2024 season on Sept. 9 against the New York Jets.
