NFL Rumors: JuJu Smith-Schuster to Sign Chiefs Contract; Won Super Bowl 57 with KC
JuJu Smith-Schuster is headed back to the Kansas City Chiefs, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
The 2018 Pro Bowl wide receiver was previously a member of the Chiefs in 2022, hauling in seven passes for 53 yards during the team's victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 57.
Smith-Schuster joined the New England Patriots prior to the 2023 season, although he was eventually released by the team on Aug. 9.
Smith-Schuster initially signed a three-year, $25.5 million contract with New England.
After racking up 78 catches for 933 yards in one season with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, he struggled to maintain the same production with Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe starting under center for the Patriots.
Smith-Schuster appeared in just 11 games with New England, recording 29 receptions for 260 yards and one touchdown.
The 2017 second-round pick started his career strong as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, accumulating 2,343 yards and 14 touchdown catches through his first two years in the NFL. His individual output became inconsistent, as he surpassed 600 receiving yards in just two of the next five seasons.
While he may not be guaranteed to start for the Chiefs again, Smith-Schuster could serve as a depth option behind Rashee Rice and 2024 first-round pick Xavier Worthy.
Kansas City signed wideout Marquise "Hollywood" Brown to a one-year deal worth up to $11 million in free agency, although his availability for the start of the season is uncertain after he was hospitalized due to a collarbone injury on Aug. 10 (via ESPN's Adam Schefter).
With Brown injured and Worthy entering his rookie season, Smith-Schuster should serve as a veteran presence in the locker room and is already familiar with the Chiefs offense.
