Saturday Recap and MLB Classic Preview
4 of 4Canada bounced back from its shutout loss to Asian-Pacific Region representative Chinese-Taipei, in which they gave up eight runs, by driving in 12 runs and picking up a win over Puerto Rico's Radames Lopez Little League squad.
The Whalley Little League team still gave up five runs, and their pitching and defense are a liability as they enter Sunday's game against Mexico. Still, they have momentum on their side and it will be interesting if they can utilize it to get on a roll.
New York staved off elimination with their victory over South Dakota, Aruba tallied eight strikeouts and eliminated the Czech Republic. Host state Pennsylvania stayed alive in the tournament with a win over New Hampshire.
Capping off Sunday's action will be the annual Little League MLB Classic pitting the New York Yankees against the Detroit Tigers.
The Tigers limited the Yankees to four hits on the strength of rookie right-handed pitcher Keider Montero work on the mound and Spencer Torkelson's work at the plate.
The 24-year-old's return to the big leagues after an extended stay in the minors included a 2-3 performance that saw him score a run and fuel the Tigers offense.
Yankees starter Carlos Rodon struggled, the bats were quiet, and the Tigers earned the shutout upset win.
Marcus Stroman gets the nod for the Yankees Sunday in Williamsport while AL Cy Young favorite Tarik Skabul will take the mound for the Tigers.
Given how extraordinary Skabul has been for Detroit this season, it would not be surprising to see the Tigers earn another win and take the series from the more celebrated Yankees, in one of the most unique and fan-friendly games of the season.
The silver lining for the Yankees? Judge had two hits in three at-bats in a May match-up with Skubal and blasted one out of the park. His performance at the plate will be the deciding factor in the Yankees' performance Sunday, as it has been all season long.
