Eagles Rumors: Jalen Hurts in 'Redemption Mode' Ahead of 2024 NFL Season

Tyler ConwayAug 7, 2024

Jalen Hurts is ready to put the Philadelphia Eagles' nightmare end to 2023 behind him.

Tim McManus and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN spoke to an Eagles source who described Hurts as being in "redemption mode" as he prepares to bounce back from an inconsistent 2023 campaign.

Hurts earned his second straight Pro Bowl appearance last season but threw a career-high 15 interceptions—the same as his 2021 and 2022 totals combined—and clashed with coach Nick Sirianni.

Hurts earned his second straight Pro Bowl appearance last season but threw a career-high 15 interceptions—the same as his 2021 and 2022 totals combined—and clashed with coach Nick Sirianni.

The Eagles collapsed amid the weight of expectations, losing five of their final six games before phoning in a Wild Card Round loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The late-season tumble led to several changes within the organization, most notably the firing of offensive coordinator Brian Johnson and defensive coordinator Sean Desai. They were replaced by Kellen Moore (offensive) and Vic Fangio (defensive), two highly respected assistants who could serve as interim coaches if Sirianni is fired.

Repairing of the relationship between Sirianni and Hurts was arguably the biggest task the Eagles faced this offseason. The pair spent much of the 2023 season on rocky terms amid disagreements over the vision for the offense. Moore's arrival is reportedly expected to "bridge the gap" between the head coach and franchise quarterback, who both took accountability for their actions last season.

"He took full responsibility, that he felt he let the team down and didn't do a good enough job of empowering the players," one team source said of a Sirianni speech from spring workouts. "It was passionate and from the heart."

According to the ESPN report, Hurts wanted more control over the offense and often took it upon himself to make changes, leading to tension and at times critical errors. The quarterback also grew frustrated over a lack of schematic changes over the course of the 2023 season when the offense started to falter.

Adding Moore, who has reliably guided elite offenses with the Cowboys and Chargers, should go a long way in creating the change Hurts sought last season. If not, both the quarterback and his head coach might be headed elsewhere in 2025.
