Doctor: Chances of Jets' Aaron Rodgers Tearing Same Achilles 'About 2%' After Injury

Paul KasabianSep 9, 2024

While it remains to be seen how the injury will affect his performance, a recurrence of Aaron Rodgers' torn Achilles is unlikely to happen for the New York Jets quarterback, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Cimini spoke with Dr. Stephen Silver, the chief of sports medicine and orthopedics at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, who put the odds of another Achilles tear at two percent.

"I do not have any worries or issues about him returning to play quarterback this season," Silver said. "... At this point, my worry is more, not only about Aaron Rodgers, but anyone who wants to play in the NFL at 40 years old, turning 41."

Rodgers joined the Jets with much fanfare after a fantastic 15-year career as the Packers' starter. His resume includes four NFL MVP awards, 10 Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl XLV victory. The ex-Cal star also threw for 475 touchdowns to just 105 interceptions.

New York landed via an offseason trade, and the hype was sky-high entering the 2023 campaign. But Rodgers suffered a torn left Achilles just minutes into his debut with the Jets against the Buffalo Bills in September, costing him the entire season.

That optimism was renewed this offseason as Rodgers returned healthy, the offensive line was restacked and a top-five defense returned alongside offensive superstars Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson.

Rodgers' Achilles tear was a disaster for New York on its own. The injury was compounded by the fact the team had to turn to Zach Wilson, Trevor Siemian and Tim Boyle in his absence. The front office seemingly failed to consider a scenario in which it would need a backup to play meaningful snaps.

The Jets didn't make that same mistake again. Were Rodgers to be ruled out again, they'd turn to one of the game's best backups (if not the best) in Tyrod Taylor, a 14-year veteran.

Taylor most recently played for the New York Giants in 2022 and 2023. He played in 11 games last year (starting five), completing 116-of-180 passes for 1,341 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. Taylor also rushed for 197 yards on 38 carries.

New York will hope he doesn't actually have to see the field, though.
