BCS Championship 2012: Defenses Will Again Reign Supreme in Rematch

Eric BowmanJun 7, 2018

The BCS title game is quickly approaching, and it's no secret the rematch between the No. 1 LSU Tigers and the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide will be a stingy defensive battle throughout.

While I do see the offenses having more success than the 9-6 "Game of the Century" on November 5, both teams' defenses won't allow any monster like performances from the opposing team.

The scoring will have to come on gimmick plays or the occasional missed assignment. As the best two teams in the nation, Alabama and LSU are very evenly matched, but eventually one team will manage to find the end zone.

Even still, this will be a low scoring affair once again because all of the best talent on the football field play on the defensive side of the ball.

The Crimson Tide have the No. 1 defense in multiple categories. Alabama has had the best total defense, rushing defense, passing defense and scoring defense, but the Tigers defense is near the top in all of those categories as well, so it doesn't give the Crimson Tide a major advantage.

The Tigers are the best team in the country when it comes to turnovers, which could be the difference maker in the BCS title game.

LSU has scored nine touchdowns on either defense or special teams this season, and there's a very strong chance a defensive playmaker finds the end zone on the big stage.

Since Alabama's defense is so superb, the Tigers defense knows it has to step up, meaning they will be after that ball all game long.

A.J. McCarron has done a good job of protecting the ball, only throwing five interceptions on the year. Of course, one of those interceptions came at a very bad time for Alabama in the first meeting against LSU.

The pressure is on for both offenses to play much better than before, but the defense is going to have its say.

Les Miles and Nick Saban have been relying on stellar defensive play all season long, and the extended time off won't hurt them as much as you might think.

Expect a slow start to the game, with some flashy plays here and there. In the end, the defense will power over the offense for the majority of the game, meaning every possession is crucial—turning the ball over could result in a loss.
