The win came just a few days after the 22-year-old cruised to his first-ever Olympic gold medal in the men's 400-meter individual medley.
Marchand's win on Wednesday was not as expected as the one earlier in the week.
He faced stiff competition from Tokyo gold medalist Zac Stubblety-Cook of Australia. The two were separated by 46-hundredths of a second in the semifinal heats and were not close off each other in Wednesday's final.
Marchand's gold added to a strong start in the overall medal table for France, who is clear in second place behind the United States. Marchand currently owns the only French medals from the pool.
