Yankees Rumors: Nestor Cortes' Name 'Definitely out There' at 2024 MLB Trade Deadline

Timothy RappJul 29, 2024

Nestor Cortes could be on the move ahead of Tuesday's MLB trade deadline.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Cortes "is a name that's definitely out there." The longtime reporter added he "won't be shocked if he's moved" and that the Yankees like St. Louis Cardinals infielder Tommy Edman—though the latter has since reportedly been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cortes, 29, is 4-9 this season in 22 starts with a 4.13 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 116 strikeouts in 124.1 innings. Like many of New York's starting pitchers, he was excellent to start the season, with a 3.41 ERA in April, a 2.48 ERA in May.

But his 3.97 ERA in June hinted at the regression to follow, and he's been rocked in his last three starts, giving up 15 runs in 13.1 innings, giving him a 7.45 ERA for the month. He's now gone six straight starts without a win.

The Yankees (62-45) as a team, meanwhile, had a team ERA of 3.22 in April and 2.37 in May. That jumped to 5.26 in June and 4.27 in July, and in the process the team saw the Baltimore Orioles (62-43) jump a game ahead of them in the AL East standings.

Granted, it hasn't just been the pitching that abandoned them, as the bats went cold at points, too. That led to the high-profile trade for Jazz Chisholm Jr., and it sounds as though New York may not stop there.

The 29-year-old Edman is off the market, however. He's hitting .248 with 13 homers, 47 RBI, 69 runs, 27 stolen bases and a .075 OPS. He's played at second base, shortstop and in the outfield for the Cardinals this season, though he does have some experience at third base in his career.

That would have made him appealing in New York, given the need for an upgrade at the hot corner. The Yankees will have to turn to other options if they remain in the market.
