Aaron Rodgers: Words Can Be 'Deceiving' About Jets' Minicamp Absence for Egypt Trip

Joseph ZuckerJul 22, 2024

New York Jets star Aaron Rodgers questioned the utility of the NFL's mandatory minicamp after he missed the team's workouts while on a trip to Egypt.

During an appearance on Pardon My Take, Rodgers contrasted the offseason schedule now with what it used to be when he played for the Green Bay Packers. He said that "it's not minicamp" now because the volume of workouts is much lower (via The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt).

"They can arbitrarily put a tag on whatever week of OTAs they want and say this is the minicamp week which makes it more mandatory than the other weeks," he said. "But it was an OTA schedule. That's how words can be a little deceiving from time to time. They can make a story about how I missed a minicamp when it was really two OTA days. I came to the first 10."

Jets head coach Robert Saleh confirmed in June that Rodgers was one of two players to have an unexcused absence from minicamp.

Saleh went on to downplay the significance.

"Aaron and I are on the exact same page," he told reporters. "There's no issue between Aaron or his teammates, for that matter. We addressed it yesterday. It's more of an issue for everyone outside the building than it is inside. That's about it."

SNY's Connor Hughes first reported on why Rodgers was out of town, explaining the veteran signal-caller planned a trip to Egypt while he was recovering from his torn Achilles. He had thought the trip wouldn't overlap with any of the Jets' offseason workouts.

Hughes also wrote it was a nonissue within the locker room.

"Multiple players SNY touched base with had zero issue with Rodgers missing minicamp, all pointing towards his attendance during the voluntary portion," he said. "Those same players were surprised that those outside One Jets Drive felt differently."

To Rodgers' point, the practical effect of him missing mandatory minicamp is minimal. The Jets offense won't be demonstrably worse because he wasn't at a few practices, and his attendance wouldn't have made the unit significantly better.

But this was more about the optics.

New York wants to rebound from a bitterly disappointing 2023 season and one that was consumed by off-field drama. Having the franchise quarterback skip a mandatory portion of the offseason because he was out of the country doesn't send a great message when you're looking to turn the page from that.

The Jets' performance on the field will ultimately determine how this is remembered or whether it's remembered at all.

If they open the 2024 campaign strong, then Rodgers' unexcused absence will be totally forgotten or mocked to the extent it's cited. Should New York stumble out of the gate, the unforgiving media ecosystem in the Big Apple will be sure to argue the seeds were planted in the summer.
