WWE: Why Not Every Talented Wrestler Needs to Hold a Major Belt

Ricky MarteJun 7, 2018

I see a disturbing trend in the WWE nowadays that I didn't see back when the company was successful and still had "Federation" at the end of its name. Any one wrestler who has any amount of name recognition or talent gets a major title without doing anything to earn it.

It seems like there is no longer any criteria for it. The two major championships in WWE, the heavyweight belt and obviously the WWE championship, mean nothing. Why do they mean nothing? Because rarely does a wrestler meet the criteria to wear the belt anymore.

Disagree? Hear me out for a second. Let me show you where I'm coming from.

Let's start with the World Heavyweight Championship. The last 10 champions have been, in order, Daniel Bryan, Big Show, Henry, Orton, Christian, Orton, Christian, Edge, Ziggler and Edge.

Out of these last 10 championship runs, there were in my opinion three legitimate champions. Mark Henry, Randy Orton and Edge. Mark Henry had paid his dues in the company, and had a fantastic run as a monster heel. Kudos to the WWE for giving him the strap.

Like it or not, Orton won his title fair and square. Edge was a credible champion as everyone knows.

I apologize in advance to our "peeps," but Christian's first reign was because of Edge. The second reign was a fluke, as he used the disqualification loophole. Big Show's reign lasted a total of 1 minute and 52 seconds, and that makes his reign also a fluke in MY opinion.

This brings me to Daniel Bryan. What exactly makes him a talented wrestler? He is one of the most sound and talented ring technicians in all of the wrestling world. He is also as boring as a piece of blank paper.

He goes out to the ring, and gets the response of two crickets. He's being booked as a cowardly face/tweener/heel who cashes in even though he said he'd wait until WM, and wins in fluky ways.

What about this makes him a credible WORLD champion? Oh yeah...it doesn't. A champion should be a total package, that's why there are only two major belts in the entire company. For the best.

The WWE Championship hasn't quite been such a mess. Although it has changed hands like hotcakes, the championship has been passed back and forth among viable champions.

The only undeserving champion at the beginning of his reign in MY opinion was The Miz, and he held the title for 160 days, when no other champion since 2008 had held the belt for more than 100 days.

Cena, CM Punk, Del Rio, like them or not, are marketable champions who have that special quality about them.

The fact that superstars like Daniel Bryan get a heavyweight title is a bit disrespectful to past superstars in my opinion, legends in particular like Randy Savage, Mr. Perfect, Roddy Piper, etc. Even a lesser known superstar, like "Road Dogg'' Jesse James, in my opinion would have made a better champion than Bryan.

Just go back and look at a video of Road Dogg's entrances. Listen to the crowd! They go wild. What pop! Road Dogg was fantastic on the mic, and wasn't bad in the ring. I'm not saying he was World title material, but he certainly was more than a guy like Daniel Bryan.

I guess all I'm saying is that maybe the way we bring the prestige back is to start putting the title on prestigious guys who are talented enough to carry it. And I'm sorry, ladies and gentlemen, Daniel Bryan is not that guy.

I don't think anything is wrong with that, either. It just seems like anyone who has any kind of success needs to get pushed to a world championship, when that shouldn't be the case.

What do you guys think?
