Bill O'Brien: Why Bill Belichick's Overrated Assistant Will Destroy Penn State

Nicholas GossJun 4, 2018

Bill O'Brien is a terrible hire for Penn State because he has no prior head coaching experience at either the NFL or collegiate level, and he's also another overrated Bill Belichick coordinator.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, Penn State will announce the Patriots offensive coordinator as their new head coach this weekend.

Penn State failed to land more established coaches such as Boise State's Chris Petersen to take over the football program, but seemed impressed with O'Brien.

Penn State has been scouting the 42-year-old O'Brien throughout the past month, sources said, and he fits the program's profile. O'Brien is well-schooled and has a mix of experience at the college and pro levels. In an odd coincidence, O'Brien even attended and played football at Brown, as Paterno did.

"

Penn State needed a big name with head coaching experience that can convince top recruits to come to State College despite the recent sex scandal that has rocked the University's community.

Nittany Lions fans should be irate that O'Brien is going to be the next head football coach. He is not a good offensive coordinator; let's not kid ourselves.

The reason the Patriots pass offense is so good is because Tom Brady is the best quarterback in the NFL, and he's been playing in the same style of offense for years. Brady's offensive line also has several top-tier veterans that have played with him for years. O'Brien hasn't made the Patriots offense much better at all.

Almost all of Bill Belichick's coordinators have been failures as head coaches at both the collegiate and NFL levels.

Romeo Crennel, Charlie Weis, Eric Mangini and Josh McDaniels were all fired after terrible tenures as head coaches after leaving Belichick's Patriots.

O'Brien will be no different.

Will O'Brien be able to recruit the best talent to come to Penn State when the university is still dealing with so much off the field? What kind of accomplishments does he have in order to persuade recruits into coming to State College?

The only thing I can think of that O'Brien can use to impress recruits is telling them that the Nittany Lions will play an open style of offense that will throw the ball a lot and be exciting to play in. But even that might not work because Penn State is at its best when they run the ball well and play terrific defense.

O'Brien is leaving the best quarterback in football to join a football program that is in the most unenviable position in the history of the sport. I wouldn't even think about considering this job for a second.

With no prior head coaching experience, O'Brien will fail mightily under the intense pressure and close watch on the program by the media and fans. He is not going to be able to handle the kind of expectations that await him at Penn State.

Like most of the Belichick coordinators, O'Brien will fail as a head coach and find himself back in the NFL someday, which is where he belongs.
