WWE: NWA/WCW Matches That Would Have Rocked at WrestleMania

David LevinJun 7, 2018

It seems every year, we have a match at a PPV event that defies words and makes us sit in suspended animation.

Whether it is Rock/Austin or Undertaker/Kane or Shawn Michaels/Bret Hart, we all have been in the moment where we thought it was the greatest match of all time.

And with the possibility of seeing Rock/John Cena and Goldust/Cody Rhodes and maybe Undertaker/Kane again, there are matches I have watched over the years or matches I wanted to see that could have been a mega success on wrestling's grandest stage.

Granted, these matches were in an era of the NWA/WCW, where wrestling mattered, and these wrestlers were in their prime at the time. But if there were a way to make it happen, the electricity would have been off the charts.

These are matches that could have headlined or been a huge success at WrestleMania.

Tommy Rich vs. Buzz Sawyer

1 of 9

In the early 1980s, it was the feud heard all around the state of Georgia and the NWA.

Tommy Rich and Buzz Sawyer beat the hell out of each other and bled like no other wrestlers.

While wrestlers like Magnum TA and The Road Warriors were just getting their starts, these two were tearing it up in arenas everywhere.

Roddy Piper vs. Greg Valentine

2 of 9

The "Dog Collar" match to end all matches.

Valentine and Piper were mortal enemies in the height of the NWA and Jim Crockett Promotions.

Valentine bloodied Piper and beat on his ear so badly that his hearing was damaged and his balance was disturbed.

Magnum TA vs. Tully Blanchard

3 of 9

They fought all over the Mid-Atlantic states, trading the United States Heavyweight Championship.

The two got in the ring one time in a cage for the first-ever "I Quit Match."

The win help put Magnum on the map. Blanchard was so underrated as a champion and sold better than any of the Horsemen.

Ric Flair vs. Harley Race

4 of 9

There may not have been a wrestler tougher than Harley Race in the 1980s.

Ric Flair may have been the best wrestler of the 1980s.

When they got in the ring in 1983 at Starrcade, it was an instant classic.

Flair said he may not have met a wrestler who took him to his limit more than Race.

The Road Warriors vs. Scott Hall and Kevin Nash

5 of 9

This never took place, but oh, what an epic performance this would be.

The raw power of Hawk and Animal against the length and skill of Hall and Nash.

And with Eric Bischoff and Paul Ellering at ringside, it would have been interesting.

Dusty Rhodes vs. Ric Flair

6 of 9

They defined Jim Crockett Promotions.

Dusty was the lead hero. Flair was the lead heel.

They battled back and forth and became the standard for great matches in the biggest stages of NWA/WCW history.

Sting vs. Ric Flair

7 of 9

Flair helped to make Sting what he has become.

Sting could not promote the business like Flair, but he became one of the best of all time.

Since their first match in 1988, both were credited with helping to keep WCW alive.

Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson vs. the Rock and Roll Express

8 of 9

This rivalry was a bit underrated in my estimation.

Not only were Blanchard and Anderson great singles champions, they were awesome tag team champions and held the World Tag Team Title on three occasions.

Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson held the World Tag Team Titles on four occasions and were one of the most popular tag teams of the 1980s.

Both teams sold for each other, creating an epic feud.

Ricky Steamboat vs. Ric Flair

9 of 9

No one sold for Flair like Steamboat.

No one sold for Steamboat like Flair.

They may be the best rivals of all time. And when they were in the ring in the 1970s, 1980s or early 1990s, it was pure ballet.
