Mario Edwards: Flip Flopping Makes Recruit Look Like Politician, Not Athlete
Does giving your word to somebody mean anything in this country anymore?
I know the college football recruiting battles are a war zone, but what’s the point of a verbal commitment when it means nothing? Why not stay silent until signing day?
That’s what I’m thinking aloud after hearing the news that the No. 1 recruit in the nation has changed his mind about what school he wants to attend this fall…again.
Defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. told reporters earlier this week that the Texas Longhorns were the No. 1 team on his long list of teams that are interested in his services.
That is just a little bit of a surprise to Florida State, who landed his verbal commitment back on March 15h.
Williams’s comments at the Under Armour All-Star Game practice just make you shake your head:
"Because I visited Texas, Texas would be tops. Then LSU (second), FSU (third).
"
So whatever school Edwards visits last is automatically his top choice? My head hurts.
He has been shopping himself out since September behind FSU’s back and it’s got to be infuriating for Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher.
Now it’s open season on Edwards again, and he will be visiting FSU and LSU again next week. Oklahoma is still in the fight as well. He’s told them in the past that he was “leaning” in that direction. That was almost a year ago, which feels like decades on the recruiting trail.
At 6'4", 275 pounds, I’m sure Edwards will make an instant impact at whatever school bows down to him the most. The program that is force to woo him for hours on end just to make an entitled 18-year-old feel special will be crowned “the winner.”
It’s a sicken game of cat and mouse and just another reason why the game of college football is corrupt on so many different levels. There has to be an easier way. Right?
