Scottie Scheffler Talks 2024 US Open Struggles, Says 2nd Round 'Definitely a Grind'
Scottie Scheffler has had a phenomenal season, but the No. 1 golfer in the world struggled at Pinehurst during the U.S. Open on Friday.
After his second-round performance, Scheffler called the day "a grind," per ESPN's Paolo Uggetti.
"It was definitely a grind," Scheffler said. "Yesterday I felt like I played really well and got a lot out of my game, which I feel like I've done a good job of this year. Today was kind of the opposite."
Though he was hoping for a better performance than the five-over-par he shot, it was still enough to make the cut line and advance to the rest of the weekend.
So far this year, Scheffler has won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Players Championship, the Masters Tournament, the RBC Heritage and the Memorial Tournament. With the win at the Memorial Tournament last weekend, Scheffler broke his own record for the most single-season earnings.
With all his success this season, Scheffler was bound to come back to earth at some point, and he finally did on Friday.
He had a decent performance in Round 1 on Thursday, notching a pair of birdies to finish just one-over-par 70, but he lost his composure in what he said was a "grind" of a second round. He had a double bogey on the fifth hole before collecting a pair of bogies on the back nine to finish four-over-par.
Luckily, a forgiving projected cut line of five-over-par means Scheffler will continue competing in Round 3, where he'll look to turn things around. He has plenty of work to do, though, as Ludvig Åberg currently leads the group at five-under-par.
