AEW Collision Results: Winners, Live Grades, Reaction, Highlights From June 8
Welcome to Bleacher Report's live coverage of AEW Collision on June 8.
Here is a look at what AEW advertised for Saturday's show:
- Daniel Garcia vs. Tate Mayfairs
- Kris Statlander vs. Robyn Renegade
- Dustin Rhodes vs. Johnny TV
- Toni Storm vs. Lady Frost
- Orange Cassidy vs. Kyle O'Reilly
- FTR vs. Wheeler Yuta and Claudio Castagnoli
Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's episode of Collision.
FTR vs. BCC
1 of 7
Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler were in tag team action in the opening bout against Blackpool Combat Club's Castagnoli and Yuta. This was only the second AEW match for Yuta since returning from an injury.
Yuta had Wheeler on the ropes after their initial exchange, so he tagged out to Harwood. Yuta tagged out so the Swiss Superman could have a turn.
Anytime you put FTR in the ring with anyone from BCC, you are likely going to get a fun match. They took their time working up to the big stuff, so there were some slow exchanges and taunting early on.
Few matches are perfect, but you can count the number of mistakes or awkward moments on one hand. All four of these men are talented performers who have worked together before, so it seemed easy for them to put on a good show.
Both teams made good use of double-team maneuvers, but surprisingly, it felt like BCC was a bit more creative in its offense than FTR this time around even though both duos had some great moments. In fact, this was one of the best matches you will see all week.
This bout had a 20-minute time limit and time ran out as Castagnoli had Wheeler in the Rings of Saturn, making this a draw. The fans booed until Harwood asked for five more minutes. Brandon Cutler came out on behalf of The Elite to say they only had 20 minutes. BCC and FTR took him out, much to the delight of the crowd.
Result: Time limit draw
Grade: A-
Notable Moments and Observations
- Yuta and Castagnoli's little dance on the stage was funny.
- If Harwood was chewing gum, Castagnoli knocked it out of his mouth. If it wasn't gum, he may be heading to a dentist after this.
- Yuta took a bad bump on top of his head when trying a headscissor.
- Castagnoli's transition into a Sharpshooter was great and the double Sharpshooters was a fun spot.
Robyn Renegade vs. Kris Statlander
2 of 7
Statlander was accompanied to the ring to take on Robyn of the Renegade Twins. Since Robyn did not get a televised entrance, it was even clearer how this would end.
After dominating Renegade for about a minute, Stat got the win with a Tombstone Piledriver. This was the typical squash match somebody gets at the beginning of a new push, so it made sense even if it wasn't that exciting.
Result: Statlander defeated Renegade
Grade: Incomplete
Notable Moments and Observations
- Stat's double knee backbreaker did not go as planned.
- Stoke's post-match promo was his usual brand of comedy and serious statements. He announced Stat as the first entrant in the women's Owen Hart cup.
Dustin Rhodes vs. Johnny TV
3 of 7
The Natural and Johnathan Television were in singles action this week, but when Johnny and Taya Valkyrie are involved, if you get one, you get both.
This was a complete mismatch in every way. Both of these men could be called veterans, but Rhodes was already a wrestler before Johnny knew what Parkour was, so he had a big edge in experience.
However, Johnny had almost every physical advantage, so it felt like an even matchup that pitted two different styles against each other.
Johnny and Taya were more concerned with kissing each other than keeping an eye on Rhodes at some points, especially during the break.
This match had some fun individual moments, but it never quite felt like they got out of second gear. After Valkyrie was ejected from ringside for getting too involved, Rhodes was able to win.
Result: Rhodes defeated Johnny TV
Grade: C+
Notable Moments and Observations
- Valkyrie's attire this week looked like something from the movie Barb Wire.
- The tornillo Johnny hit through the ropes barely made contact.
- After the match, Rhodes grabbed a mic and said he was getting old and thanked the crowd and everyone in the back before talking about Jack Perry. He quoted Dusty a lot, too.
The Premier Athletes in Action, Toni Storm vs. Lady Frost
4 of 7
Tony Nese and Ariya Daivari from The Premier Athletes were in action against two local talents who were barely able to pose before they were attacked. This was over in less than a minute and ended with Nese and Daivari standing tall.
Result: The Premier Athletes won
Grade: Incomplete
The AEW women's champion took on Frost in a non-title match, but this was another one that felt predictable based on booking.
Frost is a phenomenal talent capable of some incredible feats of agility, but AEW has never booked her to win much.
Mariah May and Luther were at ringside to cheer on their champion. Frost did a good job combatting most of Storm's offense and mind games.
They kept a steady pace throughout the match and made good use of the time they had. It's just a shame a big chunk of it took place during picture-in-picture. Storm got the victory with Storm Zero.
Result: Storm defeated Frost
Grade: B-
Notable Moments and Observations
- The big clothesline Daivari hit looked good.
- We got a quick promo from Scorpio Sky between these matches.
- Storm said May deserved to be in the Owen Hart Tournament.
Tate Mayfairs vs. Daniel Garcia
5 of 7
Progress Wrestling's Mayfairs made his AEW debut this week against Garcia. He didn't get a televised entrance but Nigel McGuinness put him over on commentary.
Garcia win what was essentially a squash match in just a couple of minutes with the Red Cross.
Result: Garcia defeated Mayfairs
Grade: Incomplete
Notable Moments and Observations
- Garcia's running dropkick was nice.
- Garcia has so many ways he can beat someone. It's a great detail for his character.
Kyle O'Reilly vs. Orange Cassidy
6 of 7
This week's main event was a singles match between Cassidy and O'Reilly. Both men are involved in storylines with stables in different way, so this was the most unpredictable outcome on the card.
They were given a long time to work with more than 20 minutes left in the show when it began, so they were able to pack a lot from bell to bell.
KOR used his BJJ and wrestling skills while Cassidy used his unorthodox style to throw him off his game as much as possible.
The Undisputed Kingdom showed up and Roderick Strong whispered something to O'Reilly. From that point, KOR focused on Cassidy's leg.
OC was able to pull off the win, but it felt like a hard-fought victory. He gave O'Reilly a thumbs-up after the match to show some respect before Trent Beretta and Kyle Fletcher attacked him. KOR ran back to the ring and helped OC but was quickly taken down.
It ended up being Willow who made the save in the end.
Result: Cassidy defeated O'Reilly
Grade: A-
Notable Moments and Observations
- Samoa Joe and Hook had a great segment attacking The Premier Athletes.
- The way KOR combated some of OC's usual offense was great. It made him look like he studied his opponent.
- The way O'Reilly zeroes in on one limb is second to none.
The Final Word
7 of 7This week's Collision was a grab bag of matches and segments that varied wildly in quality.
We got a few squash matches, a couple of decent bouts, and two really great fights that bookended the show.
BCC vs. FTR and O'Reilly vs. Cassidy were the biggest highlights, but we also got some solid promos and backstage segments including an attack from Joe and Hook that was equal parts funny and brutal.
AEW is building up several feuds at once and planting seeds for even more down the line. As long as no big injuries change plans, Forbidden Door could be one of the better AEW PPVs this year.
Grade: B
