Claressa Shields Challenges Jake Paul to Boxing Fight: 'The Offer Is Always Up There'
Undisputed light middleweight champion Claressa Shields isn't giving up on her goal of being able to step in the ring with Jake Paul.
Speaking to TMZ Sports, Shields said "the offer is always up there" if Paul wants to make it happen because she doesn't "think that he's that good of a boxer."
Shields has railed against Paul's foray into boxing for years. She told TMZ Sports in December 2020 that his match with former NBA player Nate Robinson made a "mockery" of the sport.
"I, Claressa Shields, will whoop Jake Paul's ass," she said four years ago. "He can come in the ring weighing 180 pounds and I will come weighing 168 and I will beat the s--t out of him!"
Paul hasn't answered the call from Shields, but he did attempt to facilitate a showdown between the undefeated superstar and Shadasia Green, who fights under Paul's Most Valuable Promotions banner, when Green called out Shields last year.
Paul, to his credit, has cornered the market on making money off of specialty boxing matches. He has primarily competed against non-traditional boxers, including Robinson, Anderson Silva and Tyron Woodley, but also has wins over trained boxers like Tommy Fury and Ryan Bourland.
Even if Paul were to accept Shields' request for a fight, it's hard to imagine any governing body would sanction a match between a man and a woman. Shields did push back against people who think she couldn't take Paul.
"Any man who has a problem with that, they need to understand they can't whoop my ass either," Shields told TMZ.
Shields (14-0) is set to take on Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse for the WBC heavyweight title and vacant WBO light heavyweight title on July 27.
Paul's bout with Mike Tyson, which was originally supposed to take place on July 20, has been rescheduled for Nov. 15 after Tyson had a medical issue.
