Kyrie Irving Talks Mavs Future, Says He Doesn't Mind Being Complementary to Luka
Kyrie Irving has spent much of his career as a sidekick to another star, from his time in Cleveland with LeBron James to his stint with the Brooklyn Nets alongside Kevin Durant and James Harden.
Now with the Dallas Mavericks, he's in a similar role with superstar Luka Dončić. As the two prepare to play in the NBA Finals against Irving's former team in the Boston Celtics, the veteran point guard said he's satisfied "being complementary" to Dončić for now.
"The future is still being written," Irving said. "But I can tell you that with all the extensions that are going around with [Jason] Kidd and Nico [Harrison] and potentially this summer with Luka, I think, again, I don't mind being complementary if we're going to continue to put this band together and have some great pieces around us. I've been enjoying my time here. It's been a great journey thus far."
After the Mavericks' season ends in a few weeks, Irving will face a big decision about his future. He has a player option for the 2025-26 season and could become a free agent should he choose to, but it seems like he's happy in his current role.
While Dončić is the clear X-factor for Dallas, Irving's contributions have been undeniable, especially this postseason.
After averaging 25.6 points per game during the regular season, Irving has been a major force in the Mavericks' Finals run. He struggled in the Western Conference semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunder, averaging just 15.7 points per game in the series, but answered with a huge showing in the conference finals, putting up 27 points per game and a 36-point performance to close out the series in Game 5.
As the Mavericks prepare to face the Celtics, they will look to the most Finals-experienced player on their roster for another big showing. If Irving can continue his tremendous play, it could lead to his second championship.
